WHAT
IS THE CANNERY ARTS CENTRE?
The Cannery Arts Centre is located on Norseman Road near the Esperance Bay Beach and the historic Tanker Jetty.
The centre is seen as a central focus for community access to the visual arts. Many of its initiatives attempt to create an environment that develops access, information, resources, spaces and facilities.
The Cannery Arts Centre building was originally used as a Fish Cannery in 1949, operating for one year before closure. The building has been used for many purposes including a youth centre, exhibition/dance hall and a car yard. The Cannery Arts Centre was upgraded to its present condition in 1984 and affiliated club rooms built in 1986. Much of the original structure remains and, with improvements to the main building, provides a charming gallery space.
As a community organisation run by a volunteer management committee of the Centre is comprised of its
affiliated members, member group representatives and community members. The committee is responsibile for overseeing management of the centre by providing support and direction to the Centre Manager who is employed to coordinate events, workshops and exhibitions.
The Cannery Gallery is the premier exhibition space in Esperance whilst studios and Cannery affiliated group activities attract many users. The Cannery Arts Centre also has an administrative office, self-contained flat, meeting room, art-room, shop and Artist in Residence space.
The Cannery Arts Centre is a vibrant organisation which currently attracts in excess of 20000 visitors/participants to the many and varied cultural activities offered to the community each year.
THE CANNERY ARTS CENTRE
The Centre aims to encourage the use of facilties by the whole community including those who do not traditionally use such art spaces. The Cannery is also committed to :
- Provision of information and services
- Promotion and marketing of Esperance artists
- Community arts projects
- Workshops, classes and events
- Ensuring that people disadvantaged economically, physically, stylistically have access to The Cannery Arts Centre facilities with enquiry.
Kids Stuff
CoolArts
The CoolArts Term 3 Ceramics program has nearly finished. Wow what a response! After Term 2 (painting) sold out we scheduled two classes for Term 3 and sold those out as well. 27 children went through the six week introduction to ceramics course and we are thrilled by the response. Many thanks to our two tutors: Fiona Jeffrey and Eunice Brennan, who did a fantastic job of getting the best out of our budding artists. Works completed by the kids in Term 1, 2 and 3 will be displayed in a gala exhibition at the end of the year (see exhibition page for dates)! The CoolArts program has been financially supported by Country Arts WA.
KickArts
Kids arts activities don’t stop just because school does. KickArts is on again this October school holidays. The program will be for two weeks starting on 2 October – 12 October 2007.
