SUKHJIT KAUR KHALSA

BIOGRAPHY

Sukhjit Kaur Khalsa is a performer and filmmaker based in Boorloo. Her passion for storytelling and authentic representation has led her to compete in the Australian Poetry Slam Competition (2014) as a finalist, perform on Australia’s Got Talent (2016) as a semi-finalist and speak at TedxUWA (2017) as well as TedxNewtown (2019).

She has performed with notable artists such as Missy Higgins and L-FRESH the Lion, and her poetry and community arts projects have led her to tour globally and across her nation. In 2019, Sukhjit premiered her debut theatre show, Fully Sikh, with Barking Gecko Theatre Company and Black Swan Theatre Company (Best Newcomer, Performing Arts WA Awards 2020).

Sukhjit has run oral-storytelling workshops for a range of projects, including Saga Sisterhood and Forbidden Love, at the Centre for Stories. Sukhjit has been developing her comedy series ‘What would Suki do?’ with support from ABC.

Sukhjit and her partner Perun Bonser were 1 of 10 teams to be selected for the Hollywood development lab, Imagine Impact Australia (2020), to develop their rom-com series ‘One of the Good Ones’. Sukhjit and Perun premiered their first video installation work, ‘Between Breaths’, at Goolugatup Heathcote Art Gallery in April 2022. Sukhjit is currently developing ‘Her Hair’, a spoken word documentary exploring female body hair in Perth and a new theatre work ‘Sikh Rhymes’.

ESPERANCE 2022 WORKSHOP PROGRAM

Do you have a story you are bursting to share?  It can be a funny, sad, happy, unexpected, challenging or empowering story about something that has happened to you.

This free community program is delivered in partnership with the Centre for Stories. The Centre for Stories believes that collecting and sharing stories is essential for changing attitudes and actions in our community and for encouraging and supporting empathy.  This project aims to provide representation for those who are under-represented in the community and whose voices are not often heard.  We do this so that we can gain an understanding of the varying experiences of those who are often silenced or forgotten.  Centre for Stories story training methodology is based around inclusion with a focus on supporting the storyteller to tell the best story they can.

We encourage people with personal migration experiences or other connections to migration to apply, people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, LGBTQIA+ and people living with disability to participate.

MAY WORKSHOP

May workshops are open to everyone and will focus on learning about the Oral Storytelling process and getting to know each other and Sukhjit. There are no number limits and participants can attend one or more workshops.

The three future workshop blocks (July, October and November) will be for groups of around 7-10 people who will need to commit to attending 3 x 3hr workshops (this can be 3 workshops in one month or three workshops across 2 or 3 months).  Participants who would like to share their stories publicly (at a performance or via recordings) will be supported by Sukhjit to develop their stories for presentation.
